There are two ways that heating values can be measured/reported.

HHV is higher heating value. With this method the heat of vapourization of the products of combustion are included in the measurement.

LHV is the lower heating value. Sometime called net heating value. The measurement process is stopped at 150C. The LHV can also be calculated from the HHV and the composition of the fuel.

HHV is used for essentially all commerce in North America. In Canada all low carbon fuel programs use HHV and the emission factors for GHG emissions for reporting are presented on a HHV basis.
