Hi, could you please describe the steps required to calculate avoided landfill emissions from diverted organic waste in GHGenius 5.02?

Additionally, is it possible to calculate avoided composting emissions from diverted organic waste? If yes, could you please describe the required steps?

Avoided emissions are calculated on the Coprods sheet in rows49 to 68. Avoided landfill emissions are a function of the composition of the waste. There are 16 options that are selected from the drop down menu in B49. There are an additional two options if composting is the disposal practice rather than landfilling.

In addition to the generation of methane, it is also necessary to specify how much is destroyed before it is release to the atmosphere. This is done on the Input sheet in cell F45. If composting is the alternative disposal then this cell can be zero.

There are avoided N2O emissions for composting that are also calculated when composting is chosen.

Hi Don, thanks for your answer! Just as a follow up, if the composting of food waste is the alternative disposal, would we select "composted other organic wastes" in Cell B49 of Tab Coprods?

Thank you! In situations where the waste composition is mixed (eg 70% yard waste and 30% food waste), how should we account for this in the carbon intensity calculation for fuel production and avoided landfill emissions?

Erin
There is a user defined option in the dropdown where you could enter your own value based on the feedstock mix.
