Manure and volatile solids in the model

Manure and volatile solids in the model was created by LizBrennan
Given that volatile solids per kg of manure differs by type of livestock, and the mass of manure as a bioenergy feedstock could be impacted by the manure management strategy (with respect to water content), can you provide any advice for taking these parameters into account within the model?
- Is there any way to consider moisture content of manure?
- Is there any way to adjust volatile solids?
Thank you!

The mass of manure gets used two ways. It has an impact on the transportation emissions for the manure to the AD system and it drives the avoided methane emissions. The later needs the dry weight of manure. The former could be compensated for by manually increasing the transportation distance.

I hope this helps.

Hi Don,

Does the same approach need to be taken with food waste? That is are the avoided methane emissions based on dry weight and to compensate for the transport of water (e.g. 20% solids for food waste) you would just increase the distance transported?

That is correct. However since you are doing an LCA that is done on a comparative basis the distance should be the difference in the transportation distance between the current disposal of the feedstock and the project case, if that can be determined.
